The California City Naval Shipyard was founded in 1887 by Commodore George Morrison with the aim of building warships for the United States Navy. The shipyard grew rapidly, and in 1912 it purchased the old San Francisco Navy Yard. The new facility became known as the California City Naval Shipbuilding and Repair Center (CCNSC). CCNSC produced many naval vessels during its years of operation, including the USS Constitution (1898), USS Maine (1904), USS Langley (1910), USS Arizona (1911), USS Boise (1920), USS Pascagoula (1923) and USS North Carolina (1929). In 1935, all but one of CCNSC's ships were transferred to the newly created United States Coast Guard and renamed CG-1 through CG-4. A few boats continued to be built at CCNSC into the 1970s, but production ceased completely in 1979. Today, only a small portion of the old ship yards remains active: portions of site number 2 are now used as an industrial park while sites 3 and 4 are used for residential development.

California City, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 931 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger San Diego metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now California City were the Tongva people who populated what is now Mission Valley and Point Loma before moving westward in the 18th century. In 1846, during Mexican–American War, Captain James Fenton discovered land on which California City would be founded. Fenton named his new settlement after himself, George Caley's ferry landing on Upper Baja (now called Yuma) River near modern-day Campo Grande. In 1850, surveyor John Wesley Powell traveled through central San Diego and found that there was no water available to support a permanent settlement; he recommended returning home without further investigation. However, members of the Methodist Church convinced General Sam Brannan to finance a road across San Bernardino Mountains from Vista to Saugus so that Methodists could proselytize among local Native American populations. On October 15, 1851, General Brannan authorized Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Shephard to build Fort Leavenworth on Rancho Rinconada east of present-day California City. The garrison served as a stopping point for travelers on their way north to Gold Rush sites in northern San Diego County and southern Riverside County. On November 2nd 1851 Major John Dutton laid out streets and avenues within present-day town limits when approximately 100 residents gathered at what is now Main Street for this purpose only; they did not form any sort of town government until December 8th 1851 with Aldermen Elijah Howe (from Rancho Rinconada) and Wm Higginson being elected first Mayor & Treasurer while Isaac Mapes served as Clerk & Surveyor). A post office was established at California City under name "San Dieguito" on January 5th 1860 by order of Secretary Daniel Webster with Phebe Ketchum appointed Postmaster because no one else wanted to take over the job due to dark days following an earthquake that struck nearby La Jolla May 11th 1861 which killed many people including several mail carriers and destroyed most buildings in Gadsden Village including four churches erected by Missionaries years earlier; soon afterwards another major earthquake occurred April 12th 1865 causing extensive damage throughout town populace quickly abandoned their homes/cities taken with them as far away from such horrific events as possible but some small businesses continued operations even though much loss had been caused physical destruction although today few if any remains remain aside from a few faint graffiti remnants left behind by long time residents mostly during high school age kids' hands

In 1836, California City was founded by José Joaquin Mora and his wife María Elena. The town was named for the Spanish city of Alcalá de Henares, which at that time was part of Mexico. Mora arrived in the state in 1834 to seek new land for his rancho. He soon discovered rich soils and abundant water resources near San Francisco Bay. Mora built a small fort to protect his property against raiders and began trading with the local Native Americans. By 1840, he had developed a sizable population and erected a chapel, schoolhouse, jail, post office and other buildings. In 1846, Juan Bautista Alvarado granted California City its first charter as an incorporated municipality. A year later, Californian gold seekers discovered claims on sections of Mora's Rancho Rinconada adjacent to California City proper. By 1850, some 3200 people lived in California City; by 1860 it had grown to 10600 residents. A newspaper called "The Californian" was established in 1851 and quickly became one of the most popular journals in the region. During this period of rapid growth and development there were several important events: - On November 17th, 1861 Californian Captain Elisha Burbank landed his ship "Hercules" at Point Lobos (now known as Treasure Island) while on his way from Monterey to Sacramento with supplies for General John C Fremont's army invading northern California; - On December 2nd 1860 Calaveras County Judge James Witherspoon issued an order prohibiting Mormons from settling within its boundaries; - February 14th 1861 saw the opening of what is now known as Mission Control Station #2 when Father Joaquin Curiel led Mexican mission workers from Guadalupe Coahuila into what is now Sonoma County
