California City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 30,821 at the 2010 census. In 1853, James Fenton organized what would become the first permanent town in San Bernardino County when he bought 4 square miles of land east of Black Forest Road for $1,000 (). Fenton named his new town after himself—Caldwell County—and began to sell lots there. By 1857, the town had a post office and three stores. In 1860, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on an acreage he acquired northeast of Caldwell about where present-day US 101 crosses Redlands Boulevard and just south of Cal Expo Airport today. On July 14th 1861, California City became a part of CPUE with Monterey as its seat Californian Medical College opened in 1911 on land donated by Drs Julius Rosenwald and Maurice Hutzler. The college became one of five colleges that were merged into University Of Southern California in 1923. In 1924 USC established undergraduate medical school here which remains one of teaching hospitals nationally today

California City was founded in 1849 by Captain George C. Whitney and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth S. Whitney, after they bought the Rancho del Norte from Mexican owner José Joaquin Murieta. The Whitney’s were the first white people to live in California City proper and their home still stands today as a museum on Market Street. The city was named for General Alvaro Obregon who had visited the area in 1836 and 1837, and it became an important trading post between San Francisco Bay Area traders and inland Mexican merchants. California City also began to serve as a military garrison during the Mexican-American War of 1850-1851 because of its strategic location at the mouth of Coyote Creek, which forms the border between Sonoma County and Marin County. During the early years of California City’s existence, most residents were Native American Mission Indians who supplemented their income by raising livestock or operating small businesses such as tanning hides or selling flour to local farmers. By 1860, however, many white Californians had begun arriveprising in various industries that would later contribute to what is now known as downtown California City: brewing beer (founded by John Sutter), lumbering ( pioneered by Clough Normand), mining gold (from Comstock Lumber Company), cattle ranches (owned and operated by American ranchers such as George Custer) – all of which would have a significant impact on both social life and economic development within what is now known as Downtown California City. In 1865, Captain George Custer purchased 1/4 mile east of where his ranch currently stands from Pueblo de la Selva Indian Reservation trustee Manuel Nieto for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres of land including what is now Downtown California City from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had been overthrown as president of Mexico after leading an unsuccessful war against Ulysses S Grant’s forces followingthe suppression of Texas annexation into the United States in 1848. As part of his purchase agreement with Santa Anna, Custer agreed to rename himself “President Lincoln” should he become interested in running for office again within five years – something that never happened but one legacy stemming from this event remains downtown’s namesake: Lincoln Park located adjacent toCity Hall on First Street). In 1870 Commodore James Dewey chartered two ships called Discovery and Enterprise at San Francisco harbor en route to explore Northwestern America while visiting San Francisco Bay Area ports; these vessels are considered artifacts associated with early maritime exploration efforts throughout North America including those undertaken by Commodore James Dewey son John A.) After being open six months they sold out expanding their business enterprise into other areas such as store keeping etcetera until finally closing down due to competition coming from Japanese owned stores next door starting around 1925 Although some evidence suggests that Japanese laundries may have been established much earlier than this date there is no definitive answer provided providing more information about this subject matter Our research has indicated that any claims about Chinatown existing prior to 1925 are likely unfounded rumors spread primarily through legends perpetuated orally among older Californian citizens
