The United States Air Force deployed a gift history in Camarillo, California on December 12th, 2017. The gift history was bestowed upon the city by then-Mayor Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and First Lady Linda Chavez. The Air Force stationed two F-16 Fighting Falcons at the Camarillo Municipal Airport. These jets were donated by Lockheed Martin Corporation and flew in honor of the city’s dedication to service to country. The F-16s were used for flyovers of the City Hall during Mayor Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg’s inauguration ceremony on January 4th, 2018. They also took part in Operation Santa Ana which originated from Camarillo’s love of Christmas and support for military families affected by Typhoon Mangkhut. On February 5th, 2018, the F-16s hosted a private event at Doubleday Park in town to celebrate America’s birthday with local elected officials and their families. This event raised money for hurricane relief efforts as well as providing an opportunity for networking between local businesses and elected officials. In recognition of its role in supporting American citizens abroad, the City of Camarillo has awarded two medals annually to an individual or organization that makes a significant impact within our community: one is presented to Police Department Sgt Darren Lagielsen for his work against crime; and another is given out annually to Marine Sgt Javier Vega who has been critical of misconduct within our military branches dating back many years
