The Camarillo Army National Guard has been providing support to the local community for over thirty years. The unit has deployed in support of many different missions, including peacekeeping and security operations. In honor of this history, the Camarillo National Guard donated several items to the local school system in 2013. One of the most important donations was a new truckload of supplies for Camp Crystal Lake. This was in honor of the recent centennial celebration for the Camarillo National Guard. The truckload included food, water, tents, and other equipment needed for training exercises and deployments. Additionally, it was decided that a few pieces of military memorabilia would be donated to schools throughout California. These items include a World War II veteran helmet from Ventura County and an American flagpole from Fresno County. It is interesting to note that while this donation may seem like small potatoes compared to other events or projects done by the Camarillo Army National Guard, it is still an important part of their history and culture. Each item donated brings back memories of happy interactions with local students and staff as we help support our local community.

The Camarillo, California area was first inhabited by the Mono people in the late 18th century. In 1851, the United States acquired Rancho San Paloma from Manuel Nieto and it was here that U.S. Army Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold in 1858 while exploring the Gold Rush region of California. The discovery led to a stampede of gold miners and their families over the next few years, and within two years, most of what is now Camarillo had been explored and claimed for sale by American interests. In 1861, following the Civil War, Mexico ceded control of Californias portions east of the Mexican border to America as part of an agreement known as Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This left much of eastern California undeveloped and unclaimed until 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt designated it as part of Yosemite National Park. At this time, much more land had been discoveries in southeastern California including portions now located within Camarillo city limits (such as Encinitas). However, development in eastern California stalled due to a combination of a lack of available land and strong opposition from local farmers who felt they were being favored financially over developers who wanted to build homes on their agricultural land. This situation changed with World War II when regional production soared due to manufactured goods shortages caused by rationing under wartime restrictions on materials such as coal and oil. With war-time demand still high after 1945, developers began looking for new locations for factories in what was then rural Contra Costa County (now Hayward).
