Fresh roasted coffee beans are a centuries old tradition in Camarillo, California. The first coffee roaster in the city was founded in 1892 by Elias Howe and his partner, Hiram Maxim. In 1907, Harry Knoppers opened the first commercial grocery store in town and began selling roasted coffee. In 1928, Dutch Schultz opened the first drive-in café in town and started serving fresh roasted coffee from his roast shop on Pico Boulevard. In 1951, Donnybrook Coffee Roasters arrived in town and quickly became an stronghold of the city's roasting industry. In 1986, Donnybrook merged with two other companies to become two of Camarillo's largest cafes - Donnybrook Coffee & Café and Donnybrook Coffee Corporation. Today, fresh roasted coffee is a signature item at many of Camarillo's businesses including Donnybrook Coffee & Cafe, Harry Knoppers', Dutch Schultz' Drive-in Café, Donnybrook Coffee Corporation's flagship cafe - El Cajon Boulevard restaurant - as well as several local bars/lounges. It is also exported to various countries around the world where it enjoys high popularity among consumers.

Camarillo, California is a city located in Ventura County, California. The population was 58,554 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Ventura County. The full name of the city is "Camarillo". The first human being to live in Camarillo was José Francisco Garza who settled there in 1821. In 1846, the site was named after Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his forces who had invaded California during the Mexican-American War. In 1860, General Pedro Fajardo granted land east of I-805 to James Purdy for a new town that would resist American expansionism and become an exemplar of Californio culture and architecture. After years of planning and engineering work by Purdy's son George Washington Purdy II, on October 16, 1886 Camarillo was founded at what is now Spring Street & North First Street by over 1,000 citizens from throughout Ventura County and nearby cities under the leadership of Mayor John Smedley. On July 15, 1906 (the day before San Francisco became a state), Camarillo's incorporation as a city occurred with Mayor Smedley serving as its first mayoralty. As part of this process it passed a resolution authorizing annexation into San Francisco which it did on August 12th following a referendum campaign led by then-mayor Sam Hinkley and City Clerk Hiram Janssonsmith. Cameroonian immigrants were among those who arrived in large numbers during 1907-1908 when waves of such arrivals flooded into Southern California following passage through Ellis Island along with other refugees from Europe during World War I; these newcomers called themselves "Californios." Many found work as farmers or small businesses menial jobs near their homes until they could afford more ambitious careers; however others entered professional services such as dentists or lawyers while still others took up farming again when conditions improved in Southern California following World War II (a time when farmworker wages increased rapidly due to peacetime surpluses). As CAMARILLO grew increasingly diverse over time its residents began referring to themselves simply as "Residents" rather than using distinctions like "Californios," "Mexican Americans," etc.; eventually Residents formed their own civic organizations which continue today including: Camarillo CRC (Council on Credit Unions), CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF BIOLOGICAL LABORATORIES (CABI), CAMARILLO COMMUNITY FCUYTES (CCFTEE), FIRST NATIONAL BUSINESSCENTER CAMARILLO INC., SAN DIEGO COUNTY COUNCIL ON WELFARE AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
