Camarillo is a small town located in Ventura County, California. It was founded in 1887 by farmers named Camarillo and their families. The town grew quickly due to the railroad and logging operations that took place in the area. Camarillo has a population of over 10,000 people today. The first permanent settler in what is now Camarillo was Leland Stanford, who arrived in 1887. He developed land around present-day Camarillo and built a house there in 1889. The name of the settlement at that time was “Hollywood” after William Honywood, an American film producer who had sent films to Europe. In 1907, Hollywood changed its name to “Camarillo” after General Pershing issued a proclamation calling for all Americans to use the word “California” instead of “native Americans” because of their hostilities against Japan during World War I. The post office was established at Camarillo on January 1, 1888, and continued operating until it closed on December 15, 1935. The first store opened at this location also served as the first schoolhouse in the community which operated from 1892-1896. After being operated by private owners for many years until it became part of the Ventura Unified School District in 1966, Holy Cross Catholic High School remains one of CAMARILLO'S most iconic landmarks today!
The first people to live in what is now Camarillo County were the Chumash people, who had migrated from Guerrero, Mexico. The area was named Pueblo de Santa Clara by Spanish explorers in 1776. It became part of California in 1853 and was designated as part of the Rancho San Antonio Mexican land grant given to José Joaquín Cámpora by Gov. Manuel Nieto on March 30, 1847. The first post office for Camarillo County was established at Camp Pendleton on November 15, 1850. In 1857, the American Party (represented by John Hagee) won a majority of seats in the California state legislature and moved their headquarters from Sacramento to San Francisco. To reflect this change, Camarillo County received its own county seat - Camp Pendleton - on December 12th of that year. In 1865, there were only three small hamlets left in the COUNTY when it joined with Mono County to create what is now Northern California. In 1912-13 a drought led to crop failures and strong winds which blew away local crops; this led some farmers to come up with an idea for using watermelons as fertilizers instead of soil preparation plants during dry conditions; this innovation would later lead to widespread use of irrigation systems throughout California
