The history of Camarillo, California began with the first Europeans to arrive in the area in 1821. Rancho San Luis Rey was given to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna by Governor Manuel Nieto on January 22, 1828. The grant included present-day Camarillo and parts of unincorporated Tuolumne County. A portion of Rancho San Luis Rey was also given to José Ortega in 1839. In 1848, gold was discovered near Sutter’s Mill and throughout the 1850s and 1860s, many miners mined in and around Camarillo. In 1865, a post office was established at what is now the corner of State Street and Second Avenue in downtown Camarillo. It remained open until it closed on October 15, 1912. When California became a state in 1850, its capital was located at Sacramento; however, due to the Gold Rush that began occurring in Nevada that year, the capital moved to Yuba City on February 3rd, 1861. On March 14th of that year California passed an act providing for election of a governor from each county within the state; this act created Ventura County as one such county. The first elected governor from Ventura County was John Gassaway who served from March 14th through May 12th, 1861. On July 1st 1863 during World War II American forces burned down part of an old mill complex known as Don Pedro Dam which lay just east of today's town center along Interstate 5 between Tomales Bay (north) and Crystal Cove (south). This action destroyed over two hundred buildings including twelve mills which were still operating when they were targeted by US Forces
