Camarillo, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 24,043 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Ventura County after South El Monte and it is also the most populous city outside of Los Angeles County. The first people to live here were Indians who hunted and gathered food near present-day Camarillo Boulevard and Ingersoll Drive. The area now known as Camarillo was part of Rancho Cucamonga which was granted to Juan Pico de la Vega in 1795. John Sutter arrived in 1847 and founded Sacramento City on the site of his original rancho. After becoming general manager of Northern California foruncture agent Wm Hurlbut, he traveled through Ventura County one fall day in 1851 when he discovered wine grapes growing wild on Mission Bayou east of Santa Paula. He named his new wine county "Ventura" after himself and started marketing it under that name throughout his life. In 1856, gold was found at Sutter's Mill on the San Fernando Valley floor near what is now downtown Pasadena; this led to such an influx of settlers that by 1870 there were over 200 families living here – more than any other location south of Los Angeles! By 1880, even with all the growth around them, Camarillo had only 1 resident per 10 square feet! Over time, however, annexation by cities like Lodi (1912) and Ojai (1932) made Camarillo much more densely populated; today it has almost 400 residents per square mile! In 1957–58 a group of businessmen from Redondo Beach came to town to start a paper manufacturing plant; they named their company "Cimarron Paper Company". The plant became one of America's largest paper manufacturers with its tentacles reaching into many different industries including construction (the Cimarron Building now stands), automotive parts (the Automotive Parts Division built some of Southern California's first auto factories), insurance (Cimarron created two major statewide organizations: Ventura Insurance Company and Orange Empire Insurance), retailing (Empire Department Store opened in 1927), real estate development (including developing much of La Mesa/Encino/Pasadena) and more! Today Camarillo continues its role as an industrial center with several large employers but also has seen significant residential growth thanks to improved transportation access including Interstate 5 freeway connections between LA & OC

The Camarillo Valley is a fertile, grassy valley located in the eastern half of California. The name is derived from the Spanish word "camarilla," meaning "village." The valley was first populated by the Mono tribe and later by Rancho Cahuillas. In 1849, Mission San Rafael Arcangela was founded in what is nowCamarillo and it remains one of the most important missions in the United States. In the 1870s, Camarillo began to grow as a cotton town because of its location on a salt water creek. By 1905, Camarillo had become an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for more than 60% of all commerce. Today, Camarillo is an attractive city with many popular attractions such as its wineries and beaches.
In 1824, the town of Camarillo was founded on the bank of the Sacramento River. The first post office was opened in 1826. The town was named after Captain John Camarillo, a military captain who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1851, Camarillo became an incorporated city. By 1865, it had a population of 934 people. On December 3rd of that year, Camarillo became part of Imperial County and by 1893 its population had reached 1,898 people.
