Camerillo, CA is the heart of small batch coffee history. The town was founded in 1887 by Carlos Camarillo and his father, Francisco Camarillo. Carlos started a small grocery store in the business district and soon had customers from all over the area. In 1902, he opened a coffee shop called La Casa de la Esperanza (The House of Hope). Camarillo's coffee beans were specialty-grade and were hand-selected for their flavor and quality. By 1916, La Casa de la Esperanza had become one of the most well-known small batch coffee shops in California. In that year, Carlos Camarillo passed away and his son took over the business as it continued to grow under his guidance. In 1933, Manuel Torres ordered 50 kilos of camembert from La Casa de la Esperanza and became one of its first customers. The Torres family has been involved in the smallbatch coffee industry ever since. As CAMERILLO replaced BARCELONA as California's leading producer of specialty roasts, Manuel Torres' name became synonymous with quality coffee production in this region. His legacy will live on long after he dies!

The Camarillo name may come from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (1821-1875), which was founded by Franciscan missionaries. The first post office opened in 1887 and THE CAMARILLO HOTEL DOMINICAN REPUBLIC was built in 1912 on Hwy 101 adjacent to what is now the Camarillo Civic Auditorium. In 1915, JOSEPHINE GARCIA OPENED A BOUTIQUE STORE IN CAMARILLO THAT WAS TO LAST FOR FIFTY YEARS BEFORE BEING REPLACED BY MARY ANN KELLY’S COSTUME BAR & GIFT SHOP OF AMERICA INC.. IN 1951 CAMRICO KEEPS ITS TWO DAY WEEKLY MARKET WITH AN ESTIMATED 100 TONS OF GOODS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD AT ITS PARKING LOT ON HIGHWAY 101 SOUTHWEST OF THEVILLE. In 1984 camarilloland became one of eighteen unincorporated areas within the City of Industry boundaries when that city annexed portions of neighboring towns such as Westlake Village and Bel Air. In 1990 parts of Camarillo were annexed back into Ventura County after voters passed Proposition 187 which repealed most bilingual voting requirements for Californians over twenty years old living in other states or countries who didn't meet certain conditions such as speaking fluent English and having no felony convictions
