Camarillo, California is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of southern Los Angeles County, California. The population was 16,746 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the western edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and has a Mediterranean climate. The name "Camarillo" comes from Spanish meaning "camelopardalis". The first people to live in what is now Camarillo were Native American traders who traveled up the Santa Monica River. By 1824, there were about seventy pioneers living hereabouts, most of them Americans. In 1853, Mission Santa Catalina was founded by Father Miguel de Salcedo and his wife Francisca Rios along with eight other missionaries. They named their new mission after St. Catherine of Alexandria (alias Saint Katherine), whose feast day it coincided with that year. On November 4th 1853, Fray Miguel de Salcedo set out from Monterey for this new Missionsite with five others: Don José María Crespi (the builder of Mission Santa Catalina), Vicente Lopez (of Rancho Viejo), Juan Bautista Alvarado (of Rancho Dos Obispos), Manuel Nieto y Noriega (of Rancho Encinas) and Pedro Palomares y Valdivia(of Rancho Pico Del Rey). In 1860, when Pasadena was founded by George Washington Willow and John Wesley Powell as a trading post on the Colorado River opposite Mexico City during Mexican America's war for independence from Spain - Camarillo became part of Pasadena because it lay west of Clear Lake east of Interstate 5 near its junction with US Route 101 - Camarillo's share in this development was nil since it sat within Mexican territory subject to no U.S. jurisdiction at that time! From its inception until 1907 when it became an unincorporated community under state regulation governed by a Board of Trustees chaired by Governor Hiram Johnsonson-the sleepy little town had only 7 residents! The town of Camarillo, California was founded in 1849 by brothers Edward and George P. Vallejo. The name comes from a Spanish phrase meaning "place where the grapevines grow." The brothers built a log cabin on the Rancho Santa Fe de la Cabeza, which they named La Casa del Grapes. In 1852 the Vallejos donated their land to the State of California for public school purposes. In 1881, the town's first post office opened with six mail clerks and two employees. By 1893, there were twenty-eight residents and seven businesses in Camarillo. The population peaked at over one thousand in 1912 but declined until it reached its low point of fewer than fifty in 1940.
