With a population of only 55,000 people, Campbell is home to the Air Force's only bomber Wing. The wing was established in World War II and has since grown into one of the most powerful air forces in the world. The Air Force Deployment Gift History Collection also includes items related to military equipment and vehicles that have been gifted through this unique program. The Campbell Air Force Base public affairs office acquired an "Air Defense Identification Zone" (ADIZ) in 1984. The ADIZ is a United States military area that provides warning to the civilian population of potential threats from air defense systems. In early 2006, the Air Force activated the 1st Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division at Campbell AFB under Operation Neptune's Spear. This brigade was composed of two infantry battalions and one artillery battalion. The brigade was attached to I Corps and joint Task Force Hammerhead. On May 24, 2006, it was announced that 1st Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division would be deploying as part of Operation Neptune's Spear with troops from II Corps. On July 15th,2006 it was announced that the brigade would deploy with Marine Expeditionary Unit 5th Battalion 26th Marines effective August 8th 2006 It has been reported that a gift history for 1st Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division deployment includes thirteen items including eleven consoles and four gaming chairs On October 11,2006 it was announced by General David Petraeus during his speech before Joint Force Command at Fort Worth Army National Guard Camp Bowie TX that 1st Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division will deploy again on December 7-8 this year for another Long War Season tour in Afghanistan
Campbell, California is a small city located in the Kern County of Southern California. It is the only city in Kern County and the county seat. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Campbell were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day downtown Campbell. They built their homes on high ground overlooking the Kern River and its rapids. In 1846, Colonel John Sutter established his Rancho SanFrancisco just south of town on what is now State Route 168. This ranch became part of Ulysses S. Grant's land grant to 110 miners who founded Stockton in 1849 as a way station on their journey up the Central Valley to found Fresno and other towns in that region. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Campbell when it was incorporated as a city with a small jail and two schools. In 1925, local businessmen purchased 4,000 acres (2 km2) of land east of town for $1 million from postal service millionaire Sidney Crosby to create Alpine National Park which included areas today known as Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Today Alpine remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations for hiking, skiing and fishing; it also has several resorts including Aspen Mountain Resort & Spa and Heavenly Valley Ski Resort,. The growth of industry brought many new businesses into town during the early 20th century but those firms soon went out of business because they could not compete with larger organizations such as General Motors or Ford Motor Company located nearby in GMC cars or Ford trucks or Kaiser Permanente medical care facilities located miles away with better services than anything offered by Campbell citizens or anyone else available near town center
