Campbell was founded in 1879 by John C. Campbell and named after his father-in-law, James Buchanan Campbell. The post office in Campbell was established on December 12, 1879, and served until it closed on October 15, 1957. The first settler in what is now Campbell was John C. Campbell who arrived with his family from Illinois on July 10, 1879. At the time of its founding, the town had only a few hundred residents and consisted of just a few buildings including a schoolhouse and storeroom used as an agricultural outbuilding. In 1902 the town acquired its current name when it incorporated under state law as a city. In 1906 the city annexed part of Chico which then set off another growth spurt for Campbell; this time due to new land purchases from cattle ranchers along Interstate 5 that were needed to support increased cotton production within the newly designated Kern County seat of Chico (the unincorporated community today known as Calhoun). With an expanded population came corresponding infrastructure needs such as sewers and water systems that were never fully completed due to financial difficulties during World War II; however even with these deficiencies not much progress could be made until after the war when money became available to finally correct most deficiencies once again thanks to federal funding programs initiated during Franklin D. It is named after General John Campbell, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later U.S. Army Chief of Staff during World War I. The population of Campbell was 17,752 at the 2000 census. The first European to visit what is now Campbell was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who landed on its shores on October 15, 1542 while exploring San Diego Bay. In 1821, prospector James Irvine settled at nearby Rancho Passiño and named it after himself – then anUndeveloped area that stretched from today’s downtown to Mission Bayou south of town (now part of South Pasadena). In 1853, entrepreneur George Hinkle organized a group of men called the North Valley Volunteers to fight against Native American tribes living in central and northern California. The volunteers were known as “the Pioneers” because they started from scratch—no one had ever before colonized this area and built farms and towns hereabouts. In 1863 Father Junípero Serra arrived with hisJesuit order to found anconsecrated Catholic church in what is now Campbelltown (then part of Santa Clara County). Father Serra founded a school there which soon became one of the most important institutions in this fledgling community. He also began construction on what would become America’s first mission Church – still standing today – along with other religious facilities including two hospitals, six stores and two schools (one for boys and one for girls). A post office was established at Campbell by Jervis Cooke in 1870; it remained open until 1907 when it merged with Santa Clara County’s main post office. At that time, only male residents could subscribe to the mail service so letters were sent via horseback or wagon road trips instead upriver to Manila until about 1900 when Morse Code messages became available through telephone lines . The village name “Campbellsburg” originated from a early settler’s effort to get rid of any possible confusion between his farmstead near present day Vista del Oro Road and adjacent ranchlands east of town (later home to Red Bluff) which he assumed were owned by different people . After some further research he realized that these lands actually belonged together under one common ownership but no efforts were made to consolidate them because there was simply too much opportunity for development across many miles . A longer version “Newburgh” eventually replaced Oldburgh due largely to marketing considerations by Newburgh merchants who wanted their customers know they were dealing with someone from within acceptable boundaries rather than having them billed as coming from out-of-state

After she had been sunk off Coast of Mexico while escorting convoys transporting troops and supplies during Operation Neptune's Spear, her crew were incarcerated at Lompoc Naval Air Station until they could be released under Japanese terms after Washington protested their conditions
