Campbell, California is located in the central region of California and it is bordered by Kern County to the south, Mono County to the east, and Trinity County to the north. It has an area of 205 square miles, making it one of the smallest counties in California. The population was 2,925 as of 2010. The county seat is Campbell. The first Europeans to visit Campbell were traders who passed through in 1812. The town was founded by James Irvine on a dry creek bed that empties into the San Joaquin River about a mile west of present-day downtown Campbell. In 1838 local fur trader Edward Sutter discovered gold worth $1 million near what is now downtown Campbell and named it after his mentor and patron saint, St. Philip Neri. By 1840 there were over 200 people living in Campbell; by 1860 only 10 remained due to competition from nearby towns such as Butte and Sacramento. In 1871 when Yosemite National Park was established, most of western California became part of it including portions of what are now Kern and Mono Counties as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona Territory (now parts of Los Angeles County). When Yosemite National Park was nationalized in 1916 all land within its boundaries became part of Calaveras County which included much areas now within Kern and Mono Counties outside Calaveras County proper but still within Yosemite National Park boundaries (e.g., Fish Creek Canyon). When San Bernardino County was organized on April 6, 1951 from portions of Riverside COUNTY southward along I-15Thousand Oaks Boulevard eastward (to include Pico Rivera), Campbelloda Township lies within this new county’s eastern boundary limits just beyond Thousand Oaks Boulevard” according to USGS Topo Map 8:500 CA map #528825C

Campbell was founded by James W. Campbell in 1878 as a small, one-room schoolhouse on the banks of the Kern River. In 1902, it became the first Agricultural and Mechanical College in California. The history of Campbell can be traced back to 1878, when James W. Campbell founded what would eventually become known as Campbell University. However, within a few years, Armstrong vocational school had been established nearby and business interests were starting to grow around this new center of learning. In 1902, James W. Campbell decided that his new agricultural college should be located on land he had purchased north of San Francisco Bay on the banks of the Kern River. The college quickly grew into one of America's leading Institutions of Higher Learning with its own faculty and students. During its early years at Campbell, students earned their degrees either through academic excellence or through such unusual means as working odd jobs afterschool or during term time at home (a practice still followed today). Today's students come from all over North America and Europe; many have gone on to achieve success both professionally and personally within their chosen field(s).
