Campbell, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. It is located in Fresno County. The original settlers in Campbell were Mormon pioneers who arrived from Utah in 1847. After several years of growth and development, the townsite was platted by David C. Campbell and Wm. Hickey on August 15, 1875 as part of Rancho San Juan cattle rancho located east of Fresno City on what is now State Route 151 between Sierra Vista and Amherston Roads. The post office opened in October 1876 and continued operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1907. On March 3, 1906, a small community known as "Oso" (Spanish for "hole") developed north of Campbell along US 101 near Oso Creek where today's State Route 151 intersects with CA-2 (El Centro Boulevard). The first store opened there on November 1, 1906 by Lewis Aiken Underhill with supplies for his farmstead just south of present day CA-2 at milepost 6½ North latitude and longitude 139° 16' 04" West longitude. In 1908 an agreement was made between the United States government and Mexico that would allow American citizens living north of Bakersfield to vote during Mexican national elections held that fall; this led to the name change from “Oso” to “Campbell” before voters could actually cast ballots early next year. In 1916 after World War I ended Campbelton became home to Ulysses S Grant High School which taught students from ninth through twelfth grades until it closed in 1955 when all public schools were merged into unified California state education system called CalState Fullerton campus]. Campbell was founded in 1847 by George W. Campbell and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named after General of the Armies Andrew Jackson Campbell who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1897, Campbell became a city and was renamed after Helen Keller. The first post office in Campbell opened in 1849. By 1870, the population of Campbell had reached 3,000 people. By 1900, the population had increased to 15,000 people and it stayed at that size until 1990 when it decreased to 10,000 people due to an increase in other businesses and growth within nearby towns. However, with the sudden decrease in population there has been an increase in development around Campbell over the years as investors have seen potential for growth within the city limits. The downtown area is home to many small businesses and restaurants as well as a library which is open to the public every day of the week except Mondays because it is closed for lunchtime service due to student classes being offered at that time outside of school hours.
