However, during the 1930s and 1940s Campbell grew into what is now its current incarnation: an upscale community with high-end homes, shopping malls, restaurants, schools and services offered by local businesses along Withrow Avenue (the main drag), mostly near Interstate 15. By 1860, Campbell had built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. The original town name may have been inspired by Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza's visit to San Diego County in 1769 which coincided with the time of year that Campbell's cabin was built. The early years of Campbell were difficult as it was located near two major goldfields: Don Pedro Dependable and Isleta Dunes. However, over time residents worked hard to make their community successful. They started out by building schools and churches, then later began manufacturing goods such as saddles and shoes. In 1887, they opened their own grocery store and post office which helped them become prosperous enough to build a fire tower in 1903 which still stands today! In 1916 they became one of only three communities in Simi Valley to be incorporated into the city of Ventura! In recent decades Campbell has experienced some growth due to its location close to several universities including Occidental College (in nearby West Covina), Cal State Fullerton (which offers graduate programs in business administration, law enforcement/judicial services & public administration), Ventura County Community College and Northern Arizona University! however there are also many smaller businesses that continue to fill the local economy including a hardware store, cafe/bakery, hair salon and tire shop! There are also several festivals each year such as Oktoberfest or Christmasfest which help keep things interesting for locals!
