Campbell is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and north of Bakersfield. The first people to call Campbell their home were the Costanos who lived there from 1847-1850. From 1851 to 1865 it was part of Rancho San Pedro y Bakersfield Ccd which was then divided into two parts, the east side became Campion and the west side became Humboldt. In 1866, Humboldt become an incorporated city and Campbell became a part of that city. In 1907, William Sweeny bought some land in what is now Campbell and built himself a cabin near what is now downtown. He named his new settlement "Campbell" after his old rancho where he had grown up. By 1915, when Californian Roy Barnes arrived in southern California with his family from Oregon, he started a cattle drive that passed through Campbell on its way to visit his properties in Tulare County. Barnes decided to stay in Campbell for the winter and set up shop around what are now Main Street and First Avenue South. The community grew quickly due to its proximity to other ranchers as well as local businesses such as grocery stores and post office buildings which opened up during World War II when much of southern California was under military occupation because of the war effort. The original structure of the post office is still in use today. In 1922, Campbell implemented an ordinance that authorized sales of alcoholic drinks within city limits. This ordinance became statewide law in 1933 and remains in effect today.
