Campbell’s family had been living in the area for many years, and their farmstead was one of the first to be developed in the town. The Campbells were among the first settlers in what is now Campbell, California. They originally came from Dundee, Scotland and arrived on horseback during the Gold Rush. The Campbell family operated a large cotton farm that produced crops such as corn, beans, sweet potatoes, and wheat. Their home was one of several thousand built during California’s “golden age” between 1849 and 1860. Many of these homes were designed by Scottish-born architect Alexander Macdonald. After a decade of farming success and two additional children being born to Mrs. Campbell (née Williamson), her husband bought an interest in a cattle ranch east of town in 1872. He continued to run it until his death in 1907. Campbell was founded in 1849 by John Campbell and his brother, James. The site of the original town was at what is now the intersection of State Route 128 and Old Hwy 99. The first post office opened in 1850. In 1861, the name was changed to Campbell Vale after James Campbell's daughter, who married a man named Vale. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s with construction of railroads, churches, schools, and other infrastructure. By 1910, Campbell had a population of over 2,000 people. However, during World War I the town struggled with lack of food supplies and military recruitment; as a result, most residents left for greener pastures after the war ended. In 1925, when State Route 128 was rerouted onto its present alignment through town, many residents chose to move to newer towns within California; however, about 350 remained in Campbell until 2002 when it merged into nearby San Bernardino County.
