Campbell, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–Napa County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Mormons in 1853 as a Mormon settlement on Rancho San Francisco de los Pinos. The name "Campbell" comes from George Campbell, an American explorer who discovered and named the Sacramento Valley in 1859. In 1865, George C. Campbell donated land to the city of Salinas for its incorporation as a independent municipality. The townsite was renamed after General James Haines Campbell, Jr., who led Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of California. Ultimately, the name change went through without objection but with some controversy due to its similarity to nearby South Lake Tahoe which had been Previously called Sierra Nevada Village.
