Campbell, California was founded by George H. Campbell in 1875. The community was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in battle in 1876. Campbell is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population of Campbell was 23,569. The first settlers to Campbell were men from New York and Pennsylvania who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1849. They built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street and called it "Campbell." In 1850, another group of men from New York and Pennsylvania traveled down the San Joaquin Valley and came across an area that would become Campbell. They started a ranch there and naming their new settlement after General Custer's birthplace - "Custer City." In 1865, George H. Campbell bought Rancho Rinconada from José Arguelles y Valdés for $2,000 dollars. He began to build a irrigation system which he named Sutter's Mill Creek Valley Irrigation Scheme because of his contributions to its development. In 1905, he sold his interest in Rancho Rinconada to Harry Laughlin for $50 million dollars which made him one of the richest people in California history at that time! Campbell became part of Kern County when it was created in 1912. The population peaked at 24,500 residents in 1940 but then decreased to 22,500 by 1970 due to the effects of World War II and other social changes within Kern County! After centuries of economic decline due primarily to factors such as farming specializationism and overpopulation during most parts of its history - Campbell experienced significant revitalization beginning around 2000 with passage of several local/state laws encouraging responsible land use practices including annexation by neighboring cities while also creating new opportunities for businesses within the town limits! These measures have resulted in an increase overall growth rate (+10%) while preserving much architectural heritage (See photo essay below).

During World War II, Campbell played an important role in supporting military efforts throughout California through its production of munitions and other goods necessary for war effort. After the war ended in 1946, Campbell experienced significant redevelopment which has resulted in new public works projects such as a massive new municipal building complex and numerous high-rise apartments and condos.
