On July 15, 1957, it merged with neighboring unincorporated community of Arroyo Seco to form the new city of Bakersfield. In 1937, British soldier and officer Geoffrey Chaucer published his book The Art of War, which outlined the principles of battle strategy and troop deployment. This document influence many later authors including Sun Tzu, who wrote The Art of War: A Treatise on Warfare in the Year 571 B.C., which detailed how to fight using artillery and infantry against other armies. By 1941, the US Marine Corps had developed their own version of tactical coffee called Blue Mountain Coffee (a blend of Arabica beans with Robusta beans). Soon after, other militaries followed suit with their own variations on the style of battlefield espresso. Today, Tactical Coffee remains a popular beverage enjoyed by both active duty and military personnel around the world. In 1930 the general store became the first incorporated business in the city and by 1940 it was one of the largest stores in California.
