Canyon Lake is a reservoir in the Mojave Desert of California. It is located east of Las Vegas and northwest of Tonopah. The body of water has an area of 13,000 acres and a maximum elevation of 10,800 feet (3,500 meters). The lake was formed by two separate valleys that drained the eastern end of the Comstock Lobe Mountains. In 1875, Congress created it as part of the Nevada Territory. In 1907, it became part of Riverside County and was leased to the City of las Vegas for $100 per year. In 1959, it was transferred to Carson City from city ownership and is now managed by the Nevada Division Mines and Geology Department. The surface water level changes about 3 inches (7 millimeters) per year due to evaporation and seepage from surrounding hillsides; however, underground flows provide most total flow during each summer months. During winter months there is almost no flow because snow cover remains on top mostofthehillsides. The canyon began as several small valleys which drained into adjacent ridges while running parallel to one another along their respective courses. Over time these valleys became wider and more convoluted until they generated two separate large lakes Erie Canal Valley Park & Canyon Lake due to their alignment with one another on three different levels: high ground above streams which served as conduits for water down into lower valley floors where springs poured forth; low ground below stream beds surrounded by mountains forming walls or shoulders which also acted as outlets for groundwater draining out from these cliffs; finally bottom land between summits providing both floodplain environments when inundated but also areas where groundwater accumulates over time leading eventually to release during rainy seasons

Canyon Lake is a large freshwater body located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was created by the diversion of Creek water from nearby graveyards and other sources. The name came about because it looked like a canyon. Canyon Lake is 9 miles long and 2½ miles wide at its widest point. The center of the lake is about 4 acres, but it can be much larger if there are enough boats to fill it. The first humans to live in the area were Native Americans who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1846, prospectors discovered gold near what became known as Canyon Lake and began to explore the area for treasure. In 1858, John Sutter founded Sutter's Gold Rush Colony on what is now part of Sacramento County, California and started mining around Canyon Lake. By 1870, most of the population had moved out to find more money in gold mines elsewhere in California. The first commercial development around Canyon Lake occurred during World War II when aviation pioneer Billy Mitchell built his airfield there for military use during World War II. After World War II, Canyon Lake gradually lost its importance as an agricultural site due to changes in agriculture practices that increased water usage throughout Southern California combined with a changing climate (the lakes dried up after rains). However, because of its location within easy reach by car or motorcycle riders who enjoyed riding through beautiful countryside outside Los Angeles County (), it has been popular among visitors ever since as a classic tourist destination spot full of history and beauty
The first Europeans to visit Canyon Lake were the Spanish in 1821. The area that is now Canyon Lake was part of the Rancho San Antonio de Bolsa, a Mexican land grant given to Juan José Pérez in 1834. The original fording place for the creek that later became known as Canyon Lake was at what is now milepost 9 on US 101. In 1859, an act of Congress named Canyon Lake after Major General John C. Fremont, who had been instrumental in organizing California during its early days. In 1863, the United States Geological Survey surveyed and mapped parts of southern California and made canyon lakes one of its objectives. In 1865, Calumet County was organized from portions of Los Angeles County and by 1870 it included all present-day Canyon Lake within its boundaries. The area around today's Park Boulevard and Interstate 5 came into being when developers purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 km2) plots of land east of Park Boulevard in 1927 for $5 per acre (1 ha). The first house on this tract was built by developer Harry Laughlin in 1928; it still stands today as part of the park's entrance lobby. By 1933 there were 10 homes or businesses on this block; by 1934 there had grown to 22 with a population estimated at 100 people.
