The United States Army Corps of Engineers was activated on November 8, 1847 in the town of Canyon Lake, California. The first corps engineer unit in the area was the 1st Engineer Battalion, which arrived in December 1847. In 1862, the 2nd Engineer Battalion was organized and moved to San Francisco from Canyon Lake. In 1863, the 3rd Engineer Battalion arrived at Fort Point jail in San Francisco and began construction of masonry barracks there. In 1865, when Fort Point was abandoned due to California’s secession from the United States and its admission into Mexico as a state, both Battalions were disbanded and their personnel transferred to other installations across California. The 1st Cavalry Regiment also arrived at Fort Point during this time. These units served until February 1861 when they were withdrawn for replacement purposes under orders from General McDowell with orders to return home before winter set in. On January 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order calling for all volunteers for Confederate service (including those serving with distinction) to be mustered out within one year or face dismissal from service. This order also called for all members of volunteer organizations who had not completed their terms as required by law to be discharged without benefit of retirement pay or benefits pending appeal or judicial review. 3 companies of Company A (1st Infantry), 9 companies of Company B (2nd Infantry), 4 companies of Company C (3rd Infantry), and 4 Companies D (4th Infantry) all volunteered for Confederate service within one year; however only Company A received uniforms and equipment while Companies B-D received supplies only. All remaining companies left California without receiving any military training or equipment according to army regulations at that time which would have allowed them Entry into Federal Service after discharge if they had met all requirements including completing a full term as enlisted men then being able to retire with benefits active status according To these Regulations retired Men could become officers but must first receive written confirmation from Major General Winfield Scott that he desire such an event happening before taking such an action Army Deployed Gift History

The water drawn from the dam at Canyon Lake provides drinking and irrigation for more than 125,000 people in Fresno and surrounding counties. The lake was created by damming the San Joaquin River. The first known inhabitants of the area that now includes Canyon Lake were the Mono people. In 1847, Mexican traders discovered gold here and began to prospect for treasure. By 1850, there were over 100 miners working at the site. The discovery of gold made Canyon Lake one of America's most important mining regions. After years of exploration, only a few men found any significant quantities of gold worth producing. In 1876, work started on building a new dam on the San Joaquin River to increase storage capacity for the river's flow into Northern California. Construction was completed in 1889 and Riverside County was formed from parts of Contra Costa and Kern Counties as part of this project. The main reason that Canyon Lake became so important was because it provided water for agriculture in Fresno County as well as other areas adjacent to it including Southern California and Nevada. However, even today, much effort is put into maintaining its quality as an irrigation resource due to its importance in controlling floods along both sides of the San Joaquin River which affects millions of acres across North California each year!
