Army gift history in Canyon Lake, California began with the installation of the U.S. Army on July 14, 1846. The first commanding officer of the battalion was Colonel James B. Kearny, who served in that capacity until his death on February 15, 1847. The battalion was organized at Fort Yuma on November 6, 1848 and participated in the Mexican-American War from March to October 1850. The battalion was mustered out of duty at Fort Yuma on December 12, 1850. It reorganized and redesignated as Company E of the Fourth Infantry Regiment on January 1, 1861. On April 9th it moved from Stockton to San Francisco and relieved Companies A and B of Garnet Battalion (now Golden Gate Park Police Department). The battalion remained at San Francisco until September 1862 when it deployed to Valley Forge for the Second Battle of Bull Run which resulted in a Confederate victory over Union troops under General John Pope. After this battle Battery K (then part of Company E) became one of only two guns remaining in uniform battery K surrendered two days later while still firing its cannons during an evacuation attempt by Confederate forces retreating through Valley Forge Cemetery toward Lynchburg after their victory there

Canyon Lake is a reservoir in the Inland Empire of California. It was formed by the diversion of the Central River from its original course in Mono County and diverted northeastward into Kern County. The lake is located on the border of Kern andyo Counties, near Bakersfield. The first inhabitants were the Tongva people who inhabited what is now eastern Kern County before being displaced by settlers in 1853. The town of Canyon Lake was established around this time, and soon after, a post office was established. The first water rights for the lake were acquired by J. P. Kinney in 1885, and it became a public park on December 15, 1903. In 1955, Canyon Lake underwent an entire renovation which included creating several new reservoirs as well as refurbishing many older ones including Ranger Creek Reservoir which served as both primary and backup to Canyon Lake during drought years. This project also increased spectator access to the lake while also improving environmental conditions around it such as providing more fishable areas and reducing water pollution caused by agricultural runoff into the lake.
Canyon Lake is located in the Mono National Forest, east of the town of Mammoth Lakes. It was formed by the draining of a large rain-capped valley that ran through this area. The name comes from the river canyon that forms much of its boundaries. The lake is about 22 miles long and 8 miles wide at its widest point. It has a surface elevation of 1,814 feet (553 meters).
