The Coast Guard Gift History in Canyon Lake, California begins with Captain John B. Maynard who served from 1851 to 1859. In 1861 Captain George H. Post took command and served until 1871 when he was replaced by Lieutenant Colonel George A. Hitchcockshire Jr.. In 1876 Lieutenant Colonel Hitchcockshire was succeeded by Captain Alfred Fenton and in 1889Captain Augustus S. Griggs became the first Coast Guard Commander in Canyon Lake when he took over from Commodore Augustus S. Griggs who had retired a year earlier. The present Coast Guard Commander is Rear Admiral Jeffrey J. Maunders who assumed his duties on October 1, 2006.
Canyon Lake is located in Butte County, California, about 25 miles northeast of Sacramento. The body of water covers an area of 73 square miles and has a population of about 1,800. Canyon Lake was named for the canyon that forms its eastern border. The lake was first surveyed by Captain George Culp in 1856 and opened to swimming on December 6th the same year. It then became a popular destination for anglers and boaters, with several fishing docks and a number of boats docking at the main dam. In 1966, the park service took over management of the reservoir from local farmers who had been using it as a residence farmsteads until then. As part of this conversion process, some original buildings were razed and replaced with modern structures to make way for new facilities such as picnic areas, boat ramps, interpretive trails, beach access points and restrooms. The park now offers more than 2 million annual visitors each year who can enjoy hiking/walking/kayaking/canoeing/fishing activities on 5 different watercraft types: Kayaks & Canoes (KayakRangers), Canoes & Paddle Boats (Canoeists), Powerboats (PaddleBoaters), Swimming Towels (Swimmers) or Jet Ski Rides (Jet Skis). Canyon Lake is a small, artificial body of water located in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. It was created by damming the River Tuolumne and its tributaries in 1913, and named for Canyon City, Arizona. The lake has a surface area of just . It is used for fishing, swimming, and boating. There are also several campgrounds nearby. The first Europeans to visit Canyon Lake were Spanish traders who journeyed up the Tuolumne River in 1769-1770. They found it an excellent place to launch their acrobatics demonstrations because it had no rapids or other obstacles. In 1872, prospectors discovered gold near this lake while exploring the San Bernardino Mountains. This led to an increase in mining activity around the lake, which caused some stability issues that were eventually resolved by treaty negotiations between the United States and Mexico in 1916. In 1923, when most of Southern California was still part of Mexico, President Warren G Harding signed Executive Order 6046 creating Canyon Dam on the lower Tuolumne River as part of Project Rainbow. Canyon Lake was first settled in 1851 by the Ohlone people. The town of Canyon Lake was founded in 1852, and it became a county seat in 1870. In 1933, Canyon Lake was annexed by Los Angeles County.
