Canyon Lake is a reservoir located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was formed by the junction of two streams, Canyon and Gaviota Creek. The name "Canyon" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "ravine". The lake is about 117 miles long and 24 miles wide. It has a surface area of 1,036 square miles. There are over 20,000 acres of water in the lake proper and another 10,000 acres surrounding it on three sides. The total population of people living within its boundaries was 714 as of 2000. The first inhabitants to live near Canyon Lake were Native Americans who hunted deer and other game around hereabouts during the late 18th century BC. In 1835, US surveyor John Cranch discovered gold in nearby Sutter's Fort; this led to increased mining activity at canyon country around these locations over the next few years until the discovery proved to be false (Sutter had been prospecting for silver). In 1838-39, American fur trader Edward Henty explored this area and discovered Numerous small mines at various points in what became known as "Henty country." By 1840 there were over 60 white men employed in prospecting for gold along or near canyon shores (the earliest recorded reference to such a location being made by Pahrump Indian Chief John Day). Soon after Horace Greeley organized what would become Yosemite National Park in 1890, he began acquiring land east of Oakhurst Station which lay between Gaviota Creek watershed on one side and Carson River watershed on the other side - much like that now encompassing Canyon Lake - making him essentially sole owner of all that lies within both Yosemite Valley and portions thereof since then including most notably but not limited to today's Yosemite National Park boundarylines extending northerly into Nevada County and easterly into southern Alameda County beyond which lie Fresno County proper). Alluvial fill deposited throughout eons due mainly to melting glaciers continues today as elevation changes continue resulting mostly from rainwater erosion however some areas have more than 4000 year old rocks! Today more than 100 species of birds can be found nesting or roaming around here especially during summer months when conditions are ideal with nearly every kind of bird found outside their respective ranges inside!
