Canyon Lake is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 20 miles east of Fresno. The population was 31,978 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Canyon Lake comes from its confluence with the San Joaquin River—the largest and most important tributary of the Pacific Ocean in Central California—and from nearby hills that form a natural amphitheater for performing arts events. In 1874, David Starr Jordan founded Rancho Las Colinas on what is now Canyon Lake in order to provide grazing land for his horse and cattle operations. In 1886, he sold his interest in Rancho Las Colinas to John Sutter and company for $2 million. With this investment, Jordan helped make Canyon Lake one of America's leading agricultural communities. Today, ranching remains an important part of life here as does fishing and skiing; both are popular with visitors. In 1906, Jens Erik Larsen started a logging business here which continued until 1948 when it was sold to the United States Forest Service for $5 million dollars ($ today). The Forest Service used it as an experimental campground before mothballing it in 1961 due to budget limitations. In 1978–79 it reopened as an interpretive center cum visitor center with exhibits on logging history and ecology throughout two floors including gift shop and restaurant on first floor while office space is upstairs on three floors including large art show hall/gallery/. Today there are many activities that take place around Canyon lake such as swimming (pool), fishing (streams & lakes), hiking (trails), playing tennis or golf (courseclose by), picnicking (campground), biking & horseriding (.10 miles from town center only)

Canyon Lake is a reservoir located in the Kern County, California, region. It was created by damming of the San Joaquin River and its tributaries. The lake has a surface area of 9 square miles (21 km2). It is part of the Kern River Delta system. The lake is about 55 miles (89 km) long from east to west and about 12 miles (19 km) wide from north to south. The first people to live in what is today Canyon Lake were Mission Indians who arrived in 1777. They built a small ranch here until 1846 when they Removal Act forced them out of the area. In 1869, US Army Colonel Edward Haggerty began building his military post at nearby Fort Tejon for use as a garrison against Native Americans during the Mexican-American War. In 1873, he named it Fort Haggerty after himself and added an 8-mile (13 km) stretch of stream called Canyon Creek to make it seem like he had discovered this unique natural landscape while on horseback riding through it. A year later, he erected a mill that produced flour for local traders and soldiers. In 1906, construction began on the largest dam ever built in California—the Glen Helen Dam—to create Canyon Lake behind which was developed much of present day Kern County. After years of planning and construction, the Glen Helen Dam was completed in 1915 and formed one end of Valley Stream Reservoir into which all but 4% (.25%) of Coyote Creek flowed before being diverted into Glen Helen Reservoir via two channels known as Old channel and New channel The Glen Helen Dam caused some major flooding that destroyed many homes near by with consequent loss of life or property damage amounting to $1 million dollars ($10 billion today). It also led to creation of various fishing habitats including canals feeding into Canoga Bay which now supports over 100 different species Of fish
Canyon Lake was named after Captain John C. Frémont, who explored the area in 1849. The first mill on the lake was built by Wm. H. Phelps in 1892, and it remains one of the most important mills in Northern California. The dam on the east side of the lake was built to provide power for irrigationprojects in 1915, and it still operates today.
