Canyon Lake is located in Humboldt County, California. It is a small body of water with a surface area of only 1.5 square miles and a population of just over 200. The lake was named for the canyon it resides in, Canyon Creek. The first people to live in what is now Canyon Lake were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Trail pioneers who passed through the area on their way from Oregon to California. The first permanent residents were the Ute tribe who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1875, when Rancho San Rafael was acquired by John Sutter, he began to build his new ranch near present-day Anza Borrego Springs. When Sutter died in 1879, his son Victor took over control of the rancho and soon began making improvements to Canyon Lake. In 1889, he donated land to Humboldt County for use as a park which became known as Canyon Lake Park today. Canyon Lake has been a popular spot for swimming since its establishment as a county park in 1889. The name Canyon Lake is of Native American origin, and it was first mentioned in 1847 when the United States Geological Survey mapped the area. The lake was officially named in 1913 by order of Governor Edmund C. Hogan. It is located in San Bernardino County and is a brackish body of water that averages about 20 feet deep at its deepest point. The primary purpose of the lake is for fishing and swimming, but it also has a number of other uses such as providing drinking water for rural residents and hosting competitions during summertime near its shores. Canyon Lake has been host to a number of events over the years, including both national and international championships for various sports teams. In 1937, it hosted the first edition of the United States Open Golf Championship which took place at nearby Torrey Pines Country Club. In 1961, it became home to the annual Western Open Tennis Tournament which served as one of the regular events on tour during that year. On July 1st, 1972, Canyon Lake hosted what would be considered to be one of history's most significant sporting events when more than 50 countries participated in what was known as "the Olympic Games". That event would later become known as "the Super Bowl" due to its importance at that time. The 2002 Winter Olympics were held here as well, with skiing taking center stage among many other activities.
