Canyon Lake is a small, rural lake located in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was first named by the Spanish in 1847 for General Antonio L. Canyon, who had commanded the Mexican army during the California gold rush of 1848-49. The name has been variously anglicized as Canal Lake, Canoe Lake, and Canoa Creek. The name may be derived from either Spanish or Chihuahua Indian words meaning "a deep ravine." The body of water was discovered on July 2, 1846 by Colonel John C. Fremont and his party while exploring the Gold Rush region of California. They named it after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces that had fought against Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Buena Vista on April 12 that year. Santa Anna's forces were later known as Los Angeles County's "war party". The first mill on the banks of Canyon Lake was built by Captain Charles Goodyear in 1850; it became one of the largest mills in Northern California and produced flour, coffee beans, cheese, lumber and other goods until it closed its doors in 1923 due to economic difficulties. Today only a reconstructed mill remains standing on the property of Goodyear Estate near State Route 119 east of Mammoth Lakes in Tuolumne County; it is open tothe public for tours every day from 9am to 4pm (except holidays). In 1875 an area about 35 miles long by 10 miles wide was explored and claimed for United States Territory by Lieutenant Charles Hovey and his men under command of Commodore John Doolittle; this area became part of incorporated Yosemite National Park on November 14th that same year. The original boundaries include all present-day Tuolumne County excepting portions including Mammoth Lakes which are now within Yosemite National Park proper.
