Canyon Lake is a small town in the Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River. The first coffee roasting and brewing operations were established in Canyon Lake by George English in 1892. English ran a small shop near the present day intersection of State Route 395 and State Route 62. He roasted coffee plants from seed and ground beans himself until 1899. In 1925, Harry Haines founded Haines Coffee Company in Needles, California with his father-in-law Gifford Hitchcock as president and treasurer. Harry Haines continued to run Haines Coffee Company until his death in 1969. His son Alan Haines took over management of the company after his father's death. The first commercial espresso machines were introduced to Canyon Lake by Luigi Demetrio at Pianobaracca Inc., an Italian restaurant located on Railroad Row in downtown Canyon Lake, during World War II. At that time espresso machines were generally used for making hot chocolate or cappuccino beverages instead of coffee because they could produce more power without having to use more water or milk than normal coffee machines could do
