The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Carlsbad, California during the Christmas season in 1941. The gift was a plane called the "P-38 Lightning". The P-38 was designed as an fighter aircraft and had a top speed of Mach 2.2. It was also very versatile and could be used as a bomber or reconnaissance aircraft. The plane arrived in Carlsbad on December 8th and stayed for four days before departing for its first mission. On December 10th, the P-38 flew over Santa Barbara and then headed towards San Francisco. It arrived at Fort Point on the Bay Bridge on December 12th after completing its first mission. On December 13th, it conducted its second mission and finally reached its destination, San Francisco, on December 17th. After arriving in San Francisco, the P-38 underwent repairs before being delivered back to Carlsbad on December 18th. The "P-38 Lightning" helped to defend against Japanese bombers during World War II and is now considered one of America's most famous military aircraft. The plane is still used by the USAF today and can be seen at numerous air force bases across the country.

After World War II ended, Carlsbad continued to grow rapidly with steady industrial growth until it reached its peak around 1970 with 1 million residents according to census estimates However since then there has been steady decline due to economic recession throughout much of southern California In recent years Carlsbad has become increasingly known for its kitesurfing community which made it one of only two places in Baja California USA where this activity can be found both year-round and especially during winter when waves reach up to 20 feet high

Additionally this year marks 20 years since Operation Mojave – an airborne shipment that delivered food rations and medical supplies directly to Taliban insurgents fighting in southern Afghanistan. There have even been instances where planeloads of goods have been shipped directly from USAF bases in Arizona or Nevada without ever leaving Southern California! The town declined during the 20th century but has since regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for San Diego County.
