In the early 1800s, San Diego was a small town with an army of only about 10 soldiers. The local military detachment served as garrison for General Mariano Vallejo's forces in California during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, when California became part of the United States of America, the army garrisoned here was increased to around 100 men under the command of Colonel John C. Fremont. By 1861, there were over 1,000 soldiers stationed in Carlsbad working on various missions and projects related to American " Expansion." The first unit deployed to Carlsbad was Company A (1st Battalion) 9th Infantry Regiment on November 8th 1861. This company arrived from Fort Tejon and barracks were set up at Point Loma near present-day Interstate 15 and State Route 66. The 1st Battalion (9th Infantry Regiment) disembarked from their ship at Pier 21 on December 5th 1861 and began construction of a temporary fortification known as "Fort Donner". On January 13th 1862, Company A (1st Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment) relieved Companies B & C (2nd Battalion 4th Infantry Regiment) at Fort Donner; this action marked the start of military operations in Carlsbad. On April 14th 1862, Confederate forces attacked Union troops occupying Gillespie Heights which resulted in heavy casualties among both sides. After several days of skirmishingCompany A(1st Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment) marched into town where they constructed a barricade around Main Street; this event is now known as "The Battle Of Carlsbad". The California Army National Guard, or CA ANG, was activated on September 9th, 1942 in Carlsbad. The unit was organized as the 4th Battalion, California Infantry Regiment and served throughout World War II. The battalion saw action in the Pacific theater and was awarded 10 battle stars for its service. On October 1st, 1945 the battalion redeployed to San Diego and served there until disbanding on November 20th. Since theiractivation the CA ANG has participated in numerous deployments including Operation Neptune's Spear (1991), Desert Storm (1991-1992), Operation Restore Hope (1996), AUMF operation Iraqi Freedom (2002) and most recently Operation Noble Eagle (2009).

The immigrants started a brewery and built a few homes. In the early days, there were no public roads or sewers in Carlsbad, so people had to water their plants and gardens themselves. By 1888, the population had increased to 100 and the town began to develop into an agricultural center with several businesses including a bakery, grocery store, post office, cotton gin and sawmill. In 1907, Carlsbad became one of California's 26 counties.
