Carlsbad, California is a city in San Diego County in the United States. The population was 69,763 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in San Diego County and one of its five metropolitan areas. It is located on Carlsbad Mesa on the eastern edge of San Diego Bay and has a population density of 9,779 people per square mile (3,909/km²). Its name means "Fruitful Valley" and comes from an early Spanish settlement called La Valle de Carlsbad. By 1865, however, real estate prices had soared so much that Carlsbad became incorporated as a village. In 1886 Carlsbad reached its peak with over 220 residents but by 1890 its population had plummeted to just 100 due to increased competition from nearby Encinitas and National City which had consolidated their local businesses into larger organizations. A major issue during the late 19th century was streetcar service betweenCarlsbad and downtownSanDiego because there were no tracks available between these two points north of State Street (now US 101).Streetcars stopped running completely on December 15th 1888 due to vandalism by vandals who damaged several carriages as they traveled eastbound down First Avenue near what is now All Souls Episcopal Church; this event is still commemorated annually by free admission day for all cars parked on First Avenue south of Interstate 5 until 7pm during summer months only).
