It is located on the Pacific Coast and borders the cities of La Jolla and Carlsbad. The area that would become Carlsbad was first settled by Ohlone people in the late 16th century. In 1821, Mission San José de Arroyo (the current mission) was founded hereabouts; it later became a US Naval station with jurisdiction over much of what is now San Diego County. The town began to grow after gold were found near Arroyo Seco in 1848 and local entrepreneurs set up businesses catering to miners and prospectors who came through the area for quartz and other minerals. On December 14th 1931 local residents gathered around a fire started by some youths trying to light fireworks at night near downtown Carlsbad while attending an ice cream social at nearby Balboa Park. Soon enough fires were being set all over town as players with careless abandon fought for control of burning tires and other combustible objects that could easily ignite during any kind of weather event or fireworks display!
