Carlsbad is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name "Carlsbad" comes from the Spanish words "carne de carl" meaning "flesh of Carl". The city began as Rancho Las Palmas on April 12, 1871 when Captain Edward P. Smith and his family bought some land east of present-day downtown Carlsbad. In 1912,CB&I Railroad constructed a line south to Carlsbad where it connected with the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1916, CB&I built a new station in town and named it after its founder General Electric Company president James Buchanan Carleton (1862-1946). North of town on State Route 82 were two more stations: one known as Playa Vista and the other as La Jolla Cove. The first residents of what is now downtown Carlsbad arrived in 1875 with pioneers George Futch and David Wylie from New York City. They erected small adobe huts on bluffs overlooking the Bay about three miles (4 km) northeast of present-day downtown. A post office called Carlsbad was established on November 15, 1876 by Wylie and men from Los Angeles under the direction of Postmaster Colonel John Lubbock Sr.. A store opened in 1878 by Hidalgo County resident Lorenzo Dowling at what is now Park Boulevard Southwest corner First Street NW was open daily until 1907; thereafter it closed every day except Saturday for several years because of prohibition sentiment in California at that time. In 1909 local citizens purchased 4 acres (1 km²) north of current day Fourth Street NW to become Pioneer Park which remained unoccupied until 1927 when park Superintendent Hiram Sibley initiated development plans for what would eventually become today's downtown Carlsbad area including creation of an alley running east-west between Fourth Street NW and Park Boulevard Southwest corner First Street NW which became Pioneer Square .
