Carpinteria, California is a small town in the Santa Cruz Mountains of southern California. It was founded by Rancho San Miguel de Carpinteria in 1887 on land that now includes much of downtown. The name Carpinteria comes from the Portuguese word "carpinteira", meaning "carpenter's workshop." In the 1860s, Joshua Shepard and his brother David built a cabin near what is now the intersection of State Route 1 and US Highway 101. They named it Sheppard Cabin because they had taken up residence there while surveyors surveyed their holdings in what is now Carpinteria. In 1867, when California became a state, Sheppard Cabin was one of several carpenters' workshops aroundLos Angeles County that were registered with the state as permits to do work on public roads and bridges. The first post office in Carpinteria was established at Mission San Francisco de Asís (now part of Santa Cruz) on May 10, 1887. The first store opened there on October 15, 1888. By 1907, most of downtown had been built and business had grown so much that the original mission became too busy for continued operation; it was sold to local school trustees and used as an elementary school until 1923.
