The Carpenters had come over on an American ship called the "Nancy" and were looking for a place to settle down. The town grew quickly, reaching a population of around 100 people by 1850. In 1854, the town passed through a bill that granted voting rights to all male citizens over the age of 21. By 1865, Carpentersville had grown to become one of the largest towns in Orange County. It prospered until 1886 when a fire destroyed much of the town center and killed many people. After this tragedy, Carpentersville started to decline gradually until it disappeared completely from history in 1912
