Carpinteria, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern coast of San Diego County and is about 20 miles south of downtown San Diego. The town was founded in 1887 by John Wesley Hardin and his wife Emily. The name "Carpinteria" comes from an Indian word meaning "big shell." Carpinteria became a city in 1907 and its first mayor was James W. Pickett. In 1923 it merged with nearby tournament golf course towns of Encinitas and Imperial Beach to form the City of Carpinteria-Tournament Golf Course Towns Incorporated vowing to maintain "the outstanding >> quality>> of life enjoyed by their citizens." Carpinteria has been host to many car shows throughout the years including the SEMA Show held each year since 1997 at the nearby Pee Dee Hills Resort & Casino which brings in over 100,000 visitors annually. There are also numerous crafts show held here such as Auctions America (formerly known as Americana) which has been hosted here since 1978 and offers auctions ranging from antiques to furniture to art supplies. Carpinteria, California is located in communities of the San Joaquin Valley and Central Valley. The area has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit Carpinteria were the Spanish in 1769. In 1821, Carpinteria became part of Mexico City and was known as "Pueblo de las Flores". Mexican president Porfirio Diaz renamed it "Carpinteria" on October 2, 1926. From 1944-1946, Carpinteria was a site of Operation Paperclip during World War II. The population of Carpinteria increased from about 1,500 in 1940 to more than 20,000 by 1960. During the 1970s and 1980s there was a significant influx of immigrants from East Asia who created new businesses and jobs in carpentry and other trades. Since 2000, however, the city's economy has been decline due to decreasing birthrates among its young residents and an increase in traffic congestion downtown. Today's history began with Manuel Nieto's land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 8, 1844 which included present-day Carpinteria Township and parts of central San Luis Obispo County. After two years of exploration by Nieto’s party seeking confirmation that he had actually given them land grants rather than just giving them tacit permission to stay (they thought they were living off his largesse), Francisco Lopez reported back that he found “a small piece of country well watered with many springs” but no sign whatsoever of a rancho or estate—a clear admission that Nieto had not actually given any lands away at all! A group led by José Atanasio Ramos y Galdiano explored this area further on January 9th 1840 but did not find anything either good or useful until they arrived at what is now called El Rincon de los Caballeros (the Little Corner). They named it after José Altamontes Carrillo who had fought for Santa Cruz against Monterey Bay pirates in 1839-40; Altamontes Carrillo’s treasure having been plundering local ships off the coast! In 1847 Josefina Ortiz arrived looking for her husband Antonio Ortiz who had served as governor general under Governor Davidoval de Anza y Valdez during California’s early period before it became part of Mexico. She found some fruitful vines near present day Paso Robles but didn't have enough money to buy them so she decided instead to build herself a small Rancho Ortiz along Río Arroyo east side about 3 miles long & ½ mile wide & holding 350 acres including title to several streams running through it.—This gives us our earliest indication that there may have been some kind of ranching operation going on here even if we don't yet have evidence for it.—After arriving here she set up her house & started farming raising chickens & bees etc.—Some time later Antonio Ortiz granted her 200 acres farther downriver along Rio Hondo specifically because she wanted something closerto town so she could help run things Thereafter Mrs Ortiz built another house (& got married!)—One thing we know for sure is that Vicente Guerrero lived hereabouts when he made his fateful decision to cross over into America around 1853 tho’ nobody knows exactly why or where he went next A few years later Pio Pico founded Pismo Beach across Río Agua Dulce from what is now Agoura Hills while still living near Los Olivos.—Pico might also have visited hereabouts sometime between1849&1851 when his family went missing en route from Monterey Bay—-At least one source claims Pismo Beach may have even been founded earlier than this although there doesn't seem much evidence for it.—Later explorations failed to identify any other sites within these boundaries thus making this area likely Grant territory rather than simply allowing adobe pioneers such as Vicente Guerrero accessto whatever resources they needed.–It should be noted though that Don Pedro Menéndez Cámpora claimed El Rincon de los Caballeros back in 1795)— nevertheless prior thereto there seems no documentary proof beyond oral tradition extant support verifying Don Pedro Menéndez Cámpora really owned this property…..Back then maybe someone forgot? Anyway…. By 1850 most Likely Vicente Guerrero landed hereabouts on foot circaFeb10th when reports came back alleging gold mines existed west of Sutter River——Gold Rush era begins Here too…. By Feb 25 1861 algo real happened around town tho arbitramentally Speaking all I can say For certain Is That People Noticedomething Different When All Clear Came Out Only To Return Another Day Later With More News Of Gold Mines!!!!!!!!!
