Carpinteria is a city in Carpinteria County, California, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Luis Obispo County. A small cannon and ammunition were gifted to the town by General Antonio López de Santa Anna as a token of appreciation for their support of his cause. It is part of La Jolla County and is bordered by San Diego to the south, Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the east, and Huntington Beach to the north. The first European settlement in Carpinteria was made by Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on September 25, 1542 when he landed on what is now called Point Loma. The area that would become Carpinteria was given its name from Pico de la Hoz ( Peak of the Rocks), which rests atop a mesa about three miles long and one mile wide. In 1887, A.P. Hill became editor of "The Outlook" newspaper in San Diego and decided to move his paper's printing plant downriver into what would become Carpinteria because of sanitary reasons associated with that time with Mexico City's continued use of communicable diseases as an excuse for not providing needed health care services. Hill's plant did not reach Carpinteria until after World War II when it became part of United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton which also included radio facilities used during World War II including Kirtland Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range. In 1951, Camp Pendleton closed and portions were annexed into nearby Arlington Heights while others were annexed into Whittier Township in 1959; all but Arlington Heights remain within La Jolla County today as part of unincorporated community known simply as "Carpinteria."
