The Carpinteria Naval Militia (CNM) was first organized in 1909 as the Pacific Squadron of the Coast Guard. The NM was activated on December 12, 1912 when a group of officers and men from the San Diego Municipal Shipyard volunteered to serve as a nucleus for a new military organization. On January 6, 1915, the NM became part of the newly created Department of War and Navy Affairs within the War Department. The NM was reorganized on February 1, 1916 as Marine Corps Reserve Battalion No. 132d Infantry Regiment with Headquarters at Carpinteria.On November 15, 1918, Marines from Battalion 132d Infantry Regiment landed at Anzio beachhead in Italy in support of American forces fighting against German troops under General Erwin Rommel. In 1945 Marine units from Battalion 132d Infantry Regiment fought in Okinawa campaign against Japan’s Imperial Japanese Army and their allies. During World War II our unit served ashore in all theaters including Normandy, Hollandia, Iwo Jima and Saipan; afloat off Coral Gables during air raids; land based at Yuma Proving Grounds during atomic bombing campaigns; and transported prisoners-of-war to various camps throughout Japan

This operation was significant not just because it was one of the few occasions where warships had breached Japan’s territorial waters but also because it demonstrated just how extensively America had become involved overseas9-11 since World War I10-12 (Figure 2). In fact, nearly seventy years later—during Operation Desert Storm—naval forces once again served alongside ground forces to help liberate Kuwait13 (figure 3)
