Carpinteria, California was founded on October 11, 1876 by brothers George and Joseph Carpinteria. The town is located in the San Joaquin Valley, about twenty miles south of Sacramento. At its peak in the 1920s, Carpinteria had a population of over 1,500 people. By 1931 the population had decreased to just 100 people. In 1945 Carpinteria was annexed by Berkeley, California and most of its residents were forced out. However, some took up residence in small scattered communities around the valley until the early 1970s when most of Carpinteria's remaining residents left for other parts of California or moved away altogether. Today there are only a few residences left within the original town limits and much of what was once downtown has been replaced with high-density housing developments or recreational areas. Nevertheless, Carpinteria remains an important center for regional trade and cultural activities including music festivals andakespeare readings.
