Carpinteria is located on the southern coast of Monterey Bay and has a Mediterranean climate. The first Europeans to visit Carpinteria were Spanish missionaries in 1766 who saw the potential for agriculture here due to its rich soils and abundant rainwater. The town's namesake, Pedro Carpintero, arrived in 1821 from Ferrol (Galicia, Spain), with plants and seeds to start a new citrus industry in California. By 1850, there were over 100 fruit orchards here producing crops such as oranges, apples, figs, pears and grapes. In 1869 Carpinteria incorporated as a city under the name of "Santa Cruz". During World War II many residents served in the military including Red Cross volunteers who raised food for soldiers on their farms while also building airfields near nearby US Naval Air Station Morro Bay.
