In 1938, the United States Marine Corps established a base at Carson City to provide training for Marines. This base would later become known as Camp Pendleton. Carson is a small, struggling town in the Mojave Desert of California. It was founded by Mormons in 1853 as a temporary stop on their way to Nauvoo, Illinois. Carson's economy is based on the mining and farming industries. The population of Carson peaked at 5,000 in 1907 but has declined since then due to social and economic changes such as immigration and the out-migration of miners. The first mention of Carson appears in 1853 when Brigham Young sent an emigrant party across the desert to this location for purposes of exploring new land west of the Great Salt Lake. The party consisted of seventeen men including John Crouch and his brother David Crouch who arrived on March 9th from Nauvoo with two horses and one mule. They built a small cabin near present day Springdale before continuing their journey northward along what is now US Route 395. 2 years later, they erected a larger cabin which served as both home and store until burned down in 1860 by Paiute Indians during their war against Mormon settlers. In 1865, Brigham Young organized the First Utah Territorial Legislature at Cedar City where he met with Ute Indian chiefs about setting up a territorial government for all Utah Territory under his rule. In 1870, Brigham Young appointed George Aiken as governor of Weber County after superseding Robert Owen who had served that position for three years while serving as acting governor following Adam Clayton Powell's death in 1869. After Aiken's appointment, he traveled through Weber County preaching religious revival meetings that helped boost Latter Day Saint populations around Dodge City (then part of Weber County) during this time period known as "the Great Revival." Aiken was reelected lieutenant governor in 1872 but within months died suddenly while traveling through Weber County on business; his funeral was held at Cedar City followed by a large crowd attending his burial ground just outside the city limits today known as Aiken Park located east of downtown Cedar City). His widow Ann Eliza Aiken continued to serve Idaho until her death in 1925; she is buried alongside her husband at Mountain View Cemetery adjacent to State Route 208 southbound off I-15 just east of Page Field Road between milepost 029 & 030 southbound exit #3

The first Europeans to visit what is now Carson were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The area was part of Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given to José Manuel Nieto and his wife María Elena Hidalgo by Judge Fernando Ruiz on November 15, 1821. In 1847, portions of Rancho Cucamonga went to Thomas Edison for development as Edison Township; it was later annexed by Los Angeles incorporated as a borough on December 5, 1912. On May 24, 1922, when Southern California became an independent state, Carson became its seat. The city's name comes from Major John Bemis's survey of the area in 1848 which called it "Enderby". According to the United States Census Bureau, Carson has a total area of , all of it land. The City of Carson has been built on top of an ancient Puebloan settlement dating back over 10 000 years that goes back much further than any other community in greater Los Angeles County!
