Carson, California is a town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 10,643 at the 2010 census. Carson's name is derived from Valentine Coleman which means "Valentine's Wood" in Spanish. The first white person to reside in Carson was an Austrian-born man named George Palmer who built a cabin near present day Interstate 15 and what is now Route 66 just east of downtown on Valentine's Day 1874. The area that would become Carson was surveyed for military purposes by Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell during World War II and portions of it were included within the establishment of El Centro as well as other nearby towns. It wasn't until after the war that residents began investing their time and resources into developing this unincorporated community which soon had a post office, school, store and garage. By 1960, Carson had its own police department and fire department while also becoming home to several chapels including Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1962), St. Jerome Catholic Church (1963) and Holy Cross Lutheran Church (1967). In 1984, the city annexed part of neighboring Yucca Valley creating a new municipality with same boundaries but different name - Carson City annexing parts of Yucca Valley while retaining control over its own affairs such as its school system, government services and public works division. Today, Carson remains one of the most unique communities in southern California with an eclectic mix of both old-time architecture and modern amenities found nowhere else on Earth. Carson, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 76,569 as of 2010. Carson is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and owes its name to General John C. Fremont who founded the town in 1849 on land granted by Mexico. The city's nickname "The City of the Roses" comes from the blooming flowers that can be seen in bloom during springtime around downtown Carson Station. The first person to live in what is now Carson was Manuel J. Alameda who built a cabin there in 1847. A post office called Carson was established at this site on March 6, 1850, and remained in operation until May 10, 1860. The original courthouse was erected here in 1853 and remains an important part of Carson's history today. In 1870, George Sutter arrived here with his Chinese immigrants and began construction on what would become known as Sutter's Fort which stood overlooking the then unincorporated community of Carson for over fifty years until it was destroyed by fire in 1894. During World War II, many American servicemen served in Japan including General Dwight Eisenhower who stopped by Carson on his way back home from fighting against Nazi Germany near Tokyo Bay on December 12, 1941 while en route to frontline duty at Midway Island
