Carson is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 15,411 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carson was founded by Mormons in 1868 as a small farming village on the east side of the San Gabriel Mountains. The first post office in Carson was established in 1870, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1920, Carson became an incorporated town with a population of 20 people. During World War II, Carson produced munitions for the war effort and served as headquarters for General Electric's Los Angeles plant. Since the 1990s, however, Carson has regained its former prominence as a bedroom community for Riverside County residents located near Interstate 5 and State Highway 91/"The Ring Road". Mormon settlers who arrived to establish what would become Carson began to build their homes in 1868 on land that they purchased from Mexican traders living along El Monte Creek (now called Mono Creek). The first settler named John Sorenson built his home on what is now Main Street in 1870; later that year he married Emma Teague and changed his name to Carson. Mormon pioneers also erected ranch houses—the most notable being Hyrum Smith's cabin on present-day Elmira Drive—and started farming some of what would become present-day Carson. By 1872 there were 10 residents residing within town limits; by 1888 there were 50 households residing within the town boundaries and 1 school had been organized that year. In 1920, when towns were created within San Bernardino County following passage of state legislation creating suburban counties across Southern California, Carson received city status due to its large population size and economy derived from munition manufacturing during World War II. On November 3rd of that same year, voters approved incorporation into San Bernardino County with a population of 20 residents per square mile despite opposition from neighboring communities which saw this change as an attempt by county officials to take away their tax revenues needed to support larger populations.. Three years later on January 2nd 1933 – following completion of local government reorganization resulting from changes brought about by Proposition 8 – all but one vote cast against incorporation into county resulted in Town Hall becoming operative without any notice or public meeting18 days after incorporation occurred! This event remains one of only two occasions where such an event took place when municipal functions were transferred from individual cities/towns through consolidation under new management without notice or formal proceedings23 years later! Classes commenced at Our Lady’s High School #1Z Memorial Chapel immediately upon reopening after suitably repaired damage caused by fire early last fall….. Classes have since resumed at Our Lady’s High School #2…. [Carson] experienced rapid growth following incorporation into city status due largely to easy access to interstate 5 & 91 thru annexed portions of unincorporated areas adjacent thereto…Today many businesses locate here both inside & outside city limits making it an increasingly competitive business environment….City officials are currently working hard to attract high quality businesses back inside City Limits while preserving open space & amenities outdoors
