The Cathedral City community is located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The city was founded in 1887 by Father James Boyle and the Sisters of Charity, as a religious center for Spanish Catholics who had fled to the area during the Mexican-American War. At its peak, Cathedral City had a population of over 100,000 residents and was home to two general hospitals, four colleges, and a number of churches. However, within a few years of its founding, Cathedral City's population decreased due to waves of emigration from the area. In 1980, however, local officials announced that they were considering annexing neighboring San Bernardino County to become an even more populous city. During its heyday as one of America's most vibrant cities, Cathedral City experienced significant economic growth. The city's many businesses thrived thanks to their location within easy access to Interstate 10 and other major highways. Additionally, the city maintained high levels of social segregation which helped keep African Americans away from much of what was becoming known as "the white Middle Class." This limitations on blacks' ability to participate fully in society also led some white residents to protest against what they saw as black encroachment on traditional values and cultural practices. Despite these challenges and setbacks throughout its history, Cathedral City has managed to remain an important part of Southern California life despite fluctuations in its population size or political landscape. Today, the city remains close-knit with both Catholic (and other) communities across several counties in southern California; while still struggling with some common issues faced by all cities - such as crime rates - it is a well-known and respected community that welcomes newcomers with open arms.

The Cathedral City area is located in the south central part of Los Angeles County, and it is bordered to the north by Pasadena and to the east by San Marino. The city was founded on October 25, 1881, when a group of Methodist missionaries arrived in what is now Cathedral City. The original name for the city was Mundo de Cristo Rey (Church of Christ's Kingdom). The first cathedral built in California was dedicated in 1894. It served as the seat of the First Christian Church of Los Angeles. In 1905, a new cathedral was built in downtown Cathedral City, which became home to one of LA's most prestigious universities, UCLA. Today much of downtown Cathedral City remains a cultural and educational powerhouse with important businesses such as Staples Center anchored within its walls. Cathedral City experienced some significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location within easy reach of both military sites and production plants for munitions manufacturers. After the war ended, however, Cathedral City began to fall into decline as various companies left or moved out; this caused gradual declines in population until it reached its current level today. Thanks to efforts by city leaders over recent years including planning and zoning updates that have promoted mixed-use development around key commercial corridors, many historic buildings are once again being used for housing or office space instead of traditional religious uses – providing momentum for an upcoming renaissance for this venerable city center.
The first Europeans to sight the area now known as Cathedral City were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The site was originally part of Rancho San Miguel, which was given to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo by Alvarado in 1542. The mission is now a part of the Angeles National Forest. In 1847, while California was still part of Mexico, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered an attack on the Mexican town of Chihuahua near Cathedral City. A force led by Captain John C. Fremont surprised and destroyed Santa Anna's forces, resulting in his retreat from Mexico and the proclamation of Mexican independence. During California's Gold Rush (1849-1855), many prospectors traveled through Cathedral City searching for new land to mine. Many buildings in downtown are from this time period including the old courthouse and jail, both built in 1851-52. In 1865, when California became a state, Cathedral City became one of its first towns. It has been continuously inhabited since that time with no major change except for some growth around the military base during World War II which caused some damage to historic structures such as hospitals and barracks
