On January 1st of that year, Mayor Walthall issued an ordinance regulating handguns within the city limits. This ordinance allowed civilians with permits to purchase pistols and shotguns without having prior arms training or experience. The ordinance also regulated ammunition sales, making it illegal for civilians under 21 years old to purchase any rounds of ammunition other than shells that could be fired using a percussion cap (a type of musket). This ordinance sparked concern among some residents who felt they were not being able to keep their weapons secure while their children played outside or during night raids on nearby homes. Eventually, amendments were made to the ordinance which increased regulation of gun possession but did not restrict ammo sales or playtime inside houses. In 1875, two men from Illinois brought a rifle barrel Down Under as part of a diplomatic mission and it was stored at Fort Mason until 1886 when it was sent back home as part of Border Patrolman Abbott’s collection at Mission Inn Library Museum in San Francisco (now known as California State University Dominguez Hills). In 1896 another rifle barrel from Illinois was added as part of Royster & Hubbard’s “Bouquet Rifle Collection” which is now held at East Side History Museum located on North First Street in Cathedral City (www.eastsidehistorymuseum.org). During World War II many residents turned over their guns off-limits due to patriotism or fear for wartime retaliation if their country falls behind Germany or Japan militarized further with captured weaponry. On October 15th 1946 two types revolvers arrived at our Municipal Courthouse through mail: one caliber .32 ACP (.17mm) FIREARMS OF CALIFORNIA LTD., AND THE OTHER CANDIDATE WITHIN THAT SPECIFIC CATEGORY WAS A PISTOL [Rifle Barrel] FROM ILLINOIS FOUNDED IN 1875 BY TWO MEN WHO BROUGHT IT DOWN UNDER AS PART OF A DUTY REFUSAL TO ALLOW AMERICAN SOLDIERS TO OWN GUNS AGAINST THE WILL OF THEIR PARENTS OR OFFICERS BACK HOME ([The Pistol]). AFTER ARRIVING THEY BEHINDWORDED AN OFFICER AND PLACED IT ON THE ROOM TABLE WHERE MANY OTHERS HAD PLACED THEIR Rifles BEFORE THEY RETURNED TO THEIR Homes([The Pistol]). During World War II, many California soldiers were stationed in Cathedral City. The city was also home to the #2 bomber plant at Waltham AFB from 1942 until 1945. In 1957, the California State Legislature passed laws establishing two new cities located within Metropolitan Sacramento: Sunnyvale and Elk Grove Village. On July 16, 1958—the date Sunnyvale became an independent city— cathedral city became an incorporated municipality with a population of over 50,000 citizens. In 1969–1970 (the height of heavy development around metropolitan Sacramento), fire damaged much of downtown Cathedral City and began an era known as "the Great Fire". A $1 million grant from then-Governor Ronald Reagan led to construction of a new fire station on Center Street which made it possible for firefighters to battle more effectively against wildfires across Northern California during that period By 1975, cell phone service had become available throughout most of metropolitan Sacramento; by 1998 it extended into all but one remaining district without any blocking or deregulation like that experienced in other areas such as Anaheim or Livermore
In 1863, the city of Los Angeles was founded by Hispanic settlers. The first post office in Los Angeles was established in 1867. In 1881, a new courthouse and jail were built on the site of today's Cathedral City. In 1902, the city annexed what is now Pasadena. The annexation caused a great deal of dispute between the two municipalities, which continued until 1913 when they finally merged to form one municipality.
