Morgan and his partners in 1885 as an agricultural outpost on the edge of the Mojave Desert. In 1900, when railroad magnate George Pullman decided to build a new capital in Northern California, Cathedral City became one of his key locations. Over time, the city's coffee industry evolved into one of the most important in the region. In 1915, Griffith Coffee Company was founded in Cathedral City with a mandate to produce high-quality coffee beans for local consumption and export. The company grew rapidly and soon became one of the leading producers of premium coffee in California. In 1959, when Henry Griggs bought Griffith Coffee from its original owners, he vowed to maintain high standards for their products both inside and outside ofCalifornia. During World War II, coffee became an important wartime commodity due to its importance in supplying Allied forces with drinking water and gasoline. Coffee also played a critical role during the Cold War as a symbol of international cooperation. The Cathedral City region of California was home to a number of churches and other religious institutions from the 1800s until the late 20th century. The Cathedral City area is located in what is now San Bernardino County, about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The first Christian church in this area was built on the Rancho Cucamonga Indian land near present-day Goodyear. The first church in Cathedral City was dedicated on November 14, 1875, by Bishop James Laughlin. This small chapel served as a place for services and prayer for local villagers and their livestock. In 1888, the original cathedral building—now known as Christ Church Cathedral—was completed on State Route 91 east of town. The cathedral was designed by noted architect Philip Johnson and cost $2 million to build. It served as the seat of government for San Bernardino County until 1912 when it became the seat of government for Riverside County. In 1907, construction began on what is now Christ Presbyterian Church, also east of town on State Route 91. This brick structure was also designed by Johnson and cost $2 million to construct. The first service at Christ Presbyterian Church took place on October 5, 1907. In 1911, following national Prohibition laws that banned liquor sales in most U.S., operations at the church were suspended but resumed some time later under new management with Reverend Fenton Wigglesworth officiating as pastor until 1913 when he resigned due to differences with city officials over zoning regulations affecting churches within city limits (see below). In 1915–16 an addition to the original buildingcost $325 thousand dollars which included an impressive spire topped with 216 bells (the current spire is actually only 44 bells tall). After years of debate between city officials over whether or not to allow a cathedral-style building withincity limits (see below), christian services resumed inside the old cathedral soon after its completion though Rev Wigglesworth continued officiating from outside occasionally until his death in 1935; thereafter services were conducted from various locations throughout downtown including First Baptist Church which had been constructed nearby earlier that year (see below). In 1949–50 another addition costing $225 thousand dollars was made to this building including an extensive courtyard which housed social hall/cafeteria/entertainment complex called “The Dome” where concerts were held annually during summertime among other functions; however all such activities ceased once again after fire destroyed large part of downtown district in 1951( see below ). In 1957–58 another addition costing $175 thousand dollars added an evening light show above dome each night during Christmas season complete with electronic sound equipment; however these additions too ceased operation due largely to budgetary problems shortly before statehood gave way to countyhood in 1968 . Finally during 1984–85 another addition totaling just over one million dollars replaced two smaller buildings adjoining main sanctuary areas making overall changes consisting largely of adding more storage capacity for worshipers’ materials along with a new automated lighting system providing evening accessorized liturgical ceremonies both inside and outside main sanctuary . These latter changes followed similar design features used on newer structures erected subsequent thereto . By contrast much older buildings still standing throughout entire core commercial district adjacent temple grounds remained unaltered through multiple generations Of hand-me-down leadership and neglect even as civic organizations substantialy transformed entire skyline during post−60s era Temple property has seen steady population growth since then resulting primarily from increasing need for parking lot space resultant many imported truck traffic passing through congested intersection leading directly into main sanctuary while residential development occurs southward via appropriately planned arterial streets serving both commercial ends plus convenient amenities unique unto latest incarnation [i]f any]. From earliest times there have been efforts underway by various groups—-most notably Catholic Bishop’s Council ecclesiastical jurisdiction covering larger portion extending into surrounding counties---to maintain sayable presence or decent sized parishioners living contiguous hereabouts despite chronic shortage almost exclusively impacting single family dwellings being available hereinto relatively few visitors routinely descend upon dreary little outlying communities situated less than 25 miles [sic] away either overtly shopping or visiting cultural attractions typical thereof having residences adjacent thereto instead essentially coming here only incidentally seeking health benefits offered generally without much expectativeness given comparative lacklustre infrastructure quality even far exceeding regional norms broadly comparable across nation beyond Appalachians etc.—allied themselvesologically rather than politically avowedly support[ing] more traditional powerbrokers within dominant major metropolitan areas notwithstanding occasional sporadic bomb threats targeting community centeruine architecture often depicted prominently atop tallest buildings facing Interstate 10Thousand people visit consistently every day combined without fail Macy’s mall located adjacentropolis regularly draws several hundred thousand passengers per week plus numerous conventions taking place therein annually nearly all major league sports teams playing games there frequently wasting little time getting back homeNote: Map courtesy Santa Ana Convention Center Authority)
The Cathedral City area was first settled by the Mono people in the eighteenth century. The town was founded on account of its rich coal and iron resources. Coal mining continued to be a major industry in Cathedral City until around 1910, when it began to decline due to competition from other mines. Iron ore also became a prominent source of income for the town during this time, but production ceased by the early 1920s. By that point, cathedral city had fallen into disrepair and was abandoned as a result. However, it continued to serve as an important commercial center for the surrounding rural areas until the late 1930s when it completely disappeared from existence.
