The Cathedral City Museum of Art has a history dating back to 1868, when the city's first Catholic church, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels, was built on what is now Market Street. The old school building that housed the museum before it moved to its current location on First Street in 1925 is also still in use as an art gallery. In 1937, the city bought land at Sixth and Mission Streets and erected ademolished brick building which served as the new museum. The next year, the city added a wing on top of this structure which housed both exhibition galleries and a library. In 1959, part of First Street was renamed California Avenue after Governor John F. Kennedy who had been born in nearby Redlands. From then until 1975, when it closed due to vandalism by students, the Museum operated out of two large warehouses on State Street between 1st and 2nd Streets. It reopened in 1977 using former Stonington High School cafeteria as its permanent home until 1992 when it moved into its present facility on East San Pedro Avenue just east of downtown.

The current structure was completed in 1928. It is a National Historic Landmark and is home to the United States Supreme Court Building and other important landmarks. The Cathedral City region has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement began. In 1776, Captain Manuel Nieto of the Franciscan Mission San Francisco de Asís built a church and convent on the now-demolished Pueblo de los Angeles complex on the edge of town. A year later, Spanish missionaries arrived at what is now Cathedral City with plans to create a mission there. However, they were met with hostility from local Native Americans, who attacked Santa Barbara County residents in 1777; only after Mexican reinforcements arrived did the Spaniards begin construction on their new mission. In 1853, Daniel Burnham submitted his plan for what would become Cathedral City; it included an incorporated town square surrounded by residential blocks each made out of adobe or straw huts (the first concrete was poured in 1857). The town quickly grew as various entrepreneurs developed businesses within its boundaries: jewelrymiths crafted silverware and watches from scratch, farmers raised livestock and crops, and jewelers sold necklaces, bracelets, earrings, buttons and more from storefronts along Main Street. Burnham's civic center became one of America's first purpose-built urban centers—and one of its most striking features was his use of rusticated stone walls as part of his design inspiration for much national government buildings during that era. By 1928, however, Cathedral City had lost much recent development activity to nearby Santa Clara County—a trend that continued until after World War II when housing prices began to increase rapidly throughout Northern California due to increased manufacturing sector activity outside the city limits. During this time period major changes took place at both the Federal courthouse located across First Street from downtown (now occupied by US Bank) and at San Francisco State University on Second Avenue where burnham had also proposed building a Library/School/ Observatory complex which eventually became known as Golden Gate Park . These two large projects combined transformed what had once been a sleepy agricultural outpost into one of Northern California's most vibrant cities during this period .

After World War II ended, many residents left for various reasons such as retirement or moving away from rural areas closer to civilization. However, some current residents continue to live in Cathedral City because they believe that it has continued to be an important cultural hub within central California’s larger community since its inception more than 100 years ago
