C Cathedral City is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name comes from the first Episcopal cathedral built in Southern California and dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint John the Divine, both of whom were buried in nearby Fresno. The first episcopal cathedral in Southern California was built here by the Reverend James Waddell on October 15, 1875. The building served as home for about 50 Episcopalian priests until it burned down in 1903. A new structure was erected on land donated by Judge Julius Hahn and dedicated to Sts Peter and Paul on November 6, 1904. In 1912–1913, another new Episcopal cathedral was built by Bishop George Nichols at a cost of $2 million dollars using funds raised through a sales tax campaign (the largest ever levied in that time). Completed just before World War I, it became known as "the most beautiful ecclesiastical edifice ever designed for use as a parish church." Although destroyed during World War II, its replacement—the current Cathedral City Cathedral—was consecrated on November 5th 1948 with over 1 million guests coming to view its construction progress which included 11 miles of high-speed wiring inside and outside of the spire! On February 17th 1957 an earthquake struck Los Angeles causing severe damage to churches throughout Southern California including Cathedral City including the original Episcopal cathedral which had been insured for $1 million! A fire tore through the building resulting in loss of life so extensive that not even ashes remained after more than 30 years! In 1990 however all insurance claims were settled amicably between insurers who agreed to pay outtwenty five million dollars total with interest accrued over that time period! Today Church bells still sound “Ave Maria” every day inside and outside of this historic building while much else has changed such as cell phone service being available within easy walking distance now making this one stop shopping destination if you are looking for American made products!!

In 1821, after Mexico won its independence from Spain, a group of California Missionaries went to this area to proselytize for Christ. The missions were eventually abandoned and converted into churches. In 1846, the Donation of $5,000 from Spanish Father José Joaquin de Vargas helped start a new mission at Cathedral City. This mission became known as Our Lady of GuadalupeMission and remains one of the most important religious institutions in California today. In 1862, another donation allowed for the construction of our current cathedral building which is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe and still serves as the main church for this community.
