The Cathedral City Museum of Art is the oldest museum in the San Diego metropolitan area. The museum was founded in 1887 by the Episcopal Bishop of San Diego and his wife, Mrs. Lilette Dodge. C Cathedral City is a small, but growing city in the San Joaquin Valley of California. With a population of just over 100,000 people as of the 2010 census, it is the second-most populous city in Kern County after Bakersfield. The city has experienced rapid growth in recent years due to its location and access to major transportation routes, including Interstate 5 and State Route 395. In addition to its economic significance, Cathedral City is also known for its large number of religious institutions, including five Catholic churches and one Protestant church. The first recorded mention of what is now Cathedral City was in 1851 when George Guess postulated that it was located on the site where Mono Lake used to be. Today’s downtown area was built up during the late 19th century as part of a plan by banker James Phelan to create a new town called Kernville on land he had purchased from José Castro. The name “Kernville” was never adopted officially but became synonymous with Cathedral City because so many members of Phelan’s family lived there at one time or another. New settlers arrived in Cathedral City during the early days of Californias westward expansion. By 1864, most residents were Indian Americans who had moved downriver from Sacramento into what is today Kern County during the Gold Rush era. The first Catholic church built in what is now Cathedral City was erected on Main Street between 1850 and 1861 by Father Francisco Xavier Martinez (1809-1867). At that time, Catholicism still constituted only a tiny fraction of Christendom among American Indians and their descendants living east of Mexico – cathedral cities such as Stockton and Diablo were founded primarily for Anglo-American settler populations rather than services offered by indigenous faiths. During World War II, many patriotic Californians made their homes within easy reach of military installations around Los Angeles; this included those residing within what are now central Kern County – much like today’s soldiers stationed at Camp Pendleton outside San Diego can claim residency rights under current Defense Authorization Acts. One particular resident who benefited greatly from wartime largesse was banker James Phelan (1863-1946), whose familyowned business grew rapidly thanks to government contracts won through his connections with Local 7387 (the predecessor company to international conglomerate General Electric). This prosperity helped support an expanding population while also providing ample opportunity for social interaction throughout Greater Los Angeles; similar opportunities did not exist for ordinary citizens living beyond central Kern County then or even today*. As America entered World War II again following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor* on December 7th 1941*, demand for war materiel soared†† thanks both to potential Allied victory over fascism worldwide and America's need for materials needed specifically for war production†† *. Given these burgeoning wartime needs*, local manufacturers responded quickly with unprecedented levels OF output†† *. From 1942 through 1945, California accounted for more than half* [*of] all steel produced globally** [*]. This unparalleled level of output paired perfectly with postwar austerity measures designed to ensure that every dollar spent went directly toward productive enterprises rather than being diverted into undeserving social programs*** * *. Additionally, key participants in this frantic manufacturing sector include men such as bankers James Phelan and Andrew Mellon*** *.* As recently as 1984(*!), almost 90%* [*of] all factory jobs across California were held by men** [*]. Another significant player in this period was John Dyson*** *.* After leaving GE (*), Dyson turned his attention towards newly developed jet engines which he patented*** *.* His innovative design soon led him into becoming one of Hollywoods biggest success stories*****. Unfortunately, two devastating fires swept through his Anaheim Hills backyard circa 1965 which destroyed most if not all his assets*****. In 1941, Admiral Chester Nimitz presented Ulysses S Grant with an engagement ring as a congratulatory gift after Grant's successful naval victory over Japan at Tokyo Bay on September 5th that year. Later that year, Roosevelt awarded Churchill the Distinguished Service Order for services rendered during World War II when Churchill was Prime Minister of Great Britain and Leader of the London Parliament. The city's heyday came during World War II as its servicemen drafted into the military brought prosperity to the town. But following the war, Cathedral City lost much of its population as farmsteads were sold off or abandoned, leaving little incentive for people to stay. However, over time the city has regained some of its former prominence as an aerospace manufacturing center and cultural destination.
The Cathedral City Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It includes 14 contributing buildings and 2 non-contributing buildings. The district is located in the city of Cathedral City, California. The cathedral was built in 1868 by José Joaquin Miller and it is one of the oldest churches in California. It is also one of the most well-preserved examples of Mission Revival architecture. The church has been used for various religious services and as a community center since its construction.
